Hempel High Protect II Anti-Osmosis Epoxy Primer | 35780

Hempel's High Protect is a solvent free, two component, high build epoxy, that features excellent osmosis protection or treatment, which can be applied at a very high film thickness, and still be able to dry. This primer was designed to be used below the waterline on steel and glass fibre, however can be used for prevention and repair of osmotic blistering on glass fibre above the waterline too.

The Hempel High Protect II can be a substitute for Light Primer where solvent emissions are a consideration.

How do I prepare a surface for the Hempel High Protect II Primer?

New Build (uncoated)

  1. Remove oil, grease & other contaminants with a suitable detergent.
  2. Sand the surface & remove all dust.

New build (steel)

  1. Remove oil, grease & other contaminants via high pressure fresh water cleaning.
  2. Remove all rust & loose material by abrasive blasting.
  3. If abrasive blasting is not possible, power tool cleaning is suitable.
  4. Dust off residue.

Maintenance & repair

  1. Remove oil, grease & other contaminants with a suitable detergent.
  2. Abrade the surface.
  3. Dust off the surface & let dry if required.

How do I apply the Hempel High Protect II Primer?

For Protection (glass fibre)

  1. Remove all old paint layers.
  2. Ensure new gelcoats are thoroughly cleaned
  3. Mix Hempel High Protect II at a 3:2 ratio by volume (base:curing agent).
  4. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Allow to rest for several minutes for bubbles to escape.
  6. Apply 1 coat at 150 microns.
  7. Allow to dry.
  8. Fill and fair where necessary.
  9. Apply a second coat at 150 microns.

For Protection (steel)

  1. Apply 3 coats at 150 microns DFT (Dry Film Thickness) per layer.

For Treatment

  1. Remove gelcoat & allow hull to dry out.
  2. Apply 1 coat at 150 microns.
  3. Allow to dry
  4. Fill & fair where necessary.
  5. Apply 3 more coats at 150 microns each.
  6. Overcoat with specified Hempel Primer or tie coat & chosen topcoat or antifouling.
