Hempels Dura-Satin Varnish is a single pack, urethane modified alkyd with excellent resistance to alcohol and cleaning products. This varnish is quick drying to an extremely hard and durable satin surface, which is highly resistant to wear and abrasion within hours of application, making it ideal for internal and external areas where the varnish needs to be beautiful and durable.

For internal and external use above the waterline. If overcoating times are exceeded, abrade the surface and wash off with fresh water.

How do I prepare the surface for the Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish?

New build (uncoated)

  1. Remove oil, grease and other contaminants with a suitable cleaning detergent
  2. Sand the surface
  3. Remove all dust

New build (new wood)

  1. Remove oil, grease and other contaminants with a suitable cleaning detergent
  2. Saturate the dry, clean surface with a suitable wood treatment
  3. Allow to dry

New build (plywood)

  1. Remove oil, grease and other contaminants with a suitable cleaning detergent
  2. Dry the surface
  3. Seal the surface with a suitable wood sealer

New build (teak)

  1. Degrease the surface thoroughly with a suitable degreaser
  2. Ensure the surface is dry and clean prior to application
  3. Ensure moisture content of the wood is below 16%

Previously coated surface

  1. Remove oil, grease and other contaminants with a suitable cleaning detergent
  2. Abrade the surface
  3. If the varnished wood is damaged, wood treatment may be required before application

How do I apply the Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish?

  1. Stir well before use.
  2. Apply first coat of the Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish thinned with Hempel's Thinner No. 1 (811), up to 20% maximum.
  3. Apply a second coat of the Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish, thinned with Hempel's Thinner No. 1 (811) to a maximum of 10%.
  4. Finally. apply 3 coats of undiluted Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish.

To obtain a smooth surface, sanding between coats is recommended and all dust removed. On a previously coated surface, apply 3 coats of the undiluted product.

How long do I have to wait between overcoating?

  • Minimum 6 hours at 10℃ (50℉)
  • Maximum 44 hours at 10℃ (50℉)
  • Minimum 3 hours at 20℃ (68℉)
  • Maximum 24 hours at 20℃ (68℉)

What products are recommended to be used before the Hempel Dura-Satin Varnish?

If you are applying to new wood, it is recommended to use the Hempel Wood Impreg, following the instructions on the tin.

If you are applying to plywood, it is recommended to use the Hempel Sealer, following the instructions on the tin.
