The Hempel Favourite Varnish is a single pack, alkyd based, full bodied, high gloss varnish. Extremely easy to use, giving a tough, durable finish with depth of gloss and longevity of life.
Ideal for areas where structural flexibility of the wood is required. For internal and external use above the waterline. If overcoating times are exceeded, abrade the surface and wash off with fresh water.

How do I prepare a surface for Hempel Favourite Varnish?
Preparation and Application on previously coated surface
- Clean with Surface Cleaner, dry, abrade to remove loose matter and key surface
- Remove dust using a vacuum cleaner
- Apply Favourite Varnish
Preparation and Application on untreated wood
- Clean with Surface Cleaner or Degreaser, dry, abrade to remove loose matter and key surface
- remove dust using a vacuum cleaner
- Seal/ prime with Favourite Varnish thinned 20-30% with Thinners no.1, followed by 4 coats of Favourite Varnish
- Add thinners to assist application if necessary
- Stir all products well before use
How do I apply the Hempel Favourite Varnish?
- Stir well before use.
- Apply first coat, thinned with Hempel's Thinner No. 1 (811) up to a maximum of 20%.
- Apply a second coat of Hempel Favourite Varnish, thinned with Hempel's Thinner No. 1 (811) to a maximum of 10%.
- Finally, apply 3 coats of undiluted Hempel Favourite Varnish.
- Add Hempel's Thinner No. 1 (811) to assist application if required, to a maximum of 5%.
- To obtain a smooth surface, sanding between coats and removing dust is recommended.
- If the surface has been previously coated, simply apply 3 coats of the undiluted Hempel Favourite Varnish instead.
How long do I have to wait between overcoating with the Hempel Favourite Varnish?
- 10℃ (50℉): Minimum 12 hours and maximum 4 days
- 20℃ (68℉): Minimum 6 hours and maximum 48 hours
What products are recommended to be used before the Hempel Favourite Varnish?
If you are applying to new wood, it is recommended to use the Hempel Wood Impreg, following the instructions on the tin.
If you are applying to plywood, it is recommended to use the Hempel Sealer, following the instructions on the tin.
