The International Primocon Underwater Primer is an amazing one-part primer which is designed for use below the waterline before antifouling is applied. This primer is fast drying, even in poor conditions and can be applied via a brush, roller or an airless spray.
The International Primocon Underwater Primer is an aluminium pigmented, vinyl anti-corrosive primer than can be recoated with itself after long periods, and is formulated for timber, steel, aluminium, cast iron keels and lead keels. This primer can be used under all International antifouls or as a barrier/sealer coat over incompatible or unknown antifouls. Not suitable to be overcoated with 2-component solvent-based paints.

How do I prepare a surface for the International Primocon Underwater Primer?
Bare GRP
- Sand using 180-220 grade abrasive paper.
- Remove sanding dust.
Bare Wood/Plywood
- Sand smooth with 80-180 grade abrasive paper.
- Sand again with 280 grade abrasive paper.
- Remove sanding dust by brushing, dusting or wiping.
- If wiping with solvent, allow to dry completely.
Aluminium
- Degrease with solvent, liquid detergent or International Super Cleaner.
- Sand well using aluminium compatible 24-120 grade abrasive paper.
- Coarser grades are recommended to achieve optimum adhesion.
- Clean thoroughly & allow to dry.
- Pre-prime using a suitable International Primer as soon as possible (within 8 hours).
Zinc / Galvanised Steel
- Degrease with solvent, liquid detergent or International Super Cleaner.
- Sand well using 60-12 grade abrasive paper.
- Clean thoroughly & allow to dry.
- Pre-prime using a suitable International Primer as soon as possible (within 8 hours).
Lead
- Degrease with solvent, liquid detergent or International Super Cleaner.
- Sand well using 120 grade abrasive paper or power wire brush.
- Clean thoroughly & allow to dry.
- Pre-prime using a suitable International Primer as soon as possible (within 8 hours).
Steel
- Grit blast to 2½ - near white metal surface.
- If grit blasting is not possible, grind the metal surface with 24-36 grit abrasive discs.
- Use an angle grinder on small areas.
